Points to discover when tow-starting or towing away

If you use a towrope:

Notes for the commuter of the towing vehicle

– The towrope must be taut earlier driving off.
– Engage the clutch very gently when starting to move; on vehicles with automatic gearbox press the accelerator slowly.

Notes for the commuter of the towed vehicle

– The ignition should exist switched on so that the turn signals, horn, windscreen wipers and washers can be used. Please ensure that the steering wheel is unlocked when you switch on the ignition, and that it moves freely.
– Put gear lever in neutral (manual gearbox) or motion selector lever to position North (automatic gearbox).

Towrope or towbar

Do not pull besides difficult with the towing vehicle and have intendance to avoid jerking the towrope. When towing on a loose surface there is always a risk of overloading and damaging the anchorage points.

Circumspection

If there is no oil in the gearbox or no lubricant in the automatic transmission the machine may only be towed with the driven wheels lifted articulate of the road, or transported on a special car transporter or trailer.

Note

• Notation the regulations concerning towing.

Front towline anchorage

The front end towline anchorage is just mounted if the vehicle has to be towed.

The spiral connexion for the towline anchorage is located backside a encompass cap on the right side of the front bumper.

– Take the towline anchorage out of the vehicle's tool kit.
– To detach the cover cap from the bumper, firmly press the lower function of the cap in to release it ⇒ fig. 280.
– Screw the towline anchorage firmly all the style into the screw connection ⇒ fig. 281.

After use, unscrew the towline anchorage and put it back in the toolbox. Replace the cap in the bumper. The towline anchorage should always be kept in the vehicle.

WARNING

If the towline anchorage is not screwed in as far equally the stop, there is a risk of the spiral connection shearing off during towing (accident risk).

Rear towline anchorage

Vehicles which do not take a factory-fitted towing bracket* have a towline anchorage on the correct side of the rear bumper.

Vehicles with towline anchorage

– Take the towline anchorage out of the vehicle's tool kit.
– To detach the cover cap from the bumper, firmly press the lower part of the cap inwards to release it ⇒ fig. 282.
– Screw the towline anchorage firmly all the way into the spiral connectedness.

Vehicles with towing bracket*

– Fit the towing bracket.
– Attach the towbar or the towrope to the towing bracket.

After use, unscrew the towline anchorage and put it dorsum in the toolbox. Replace the cap in the screw connexion. The towline anchorage or towing bracket should always be kept in the vehicle.

Vehicles which have a factory-fitted towing bracket* do not have a screw connection at the rear for the towline anchorage.

WARNING

• If the towline anchorage is not screwed in as far every bit the stop, there is a hazard of the screw connection shearing off during towing (blow risk).
• If your car has a towing bracket*, delight use merely special tow bars with suitable attachments (i.e. tow bars which are specially designed for use with towing brackets) to avoid damage to the coupling equipment.
• If your car has a towing bracket*, please use but special towing ropes (adventure of accident).

Tow-starting

As a general rule, tow-starting is not recommended.

– Engage second or 3rd gear before moving off.
– Printing the clutch and hold the pedal downwardly.
– Switch on the ignition.
– In one case both vehicles are moving, release the clutch.
– Every bit soon as the engine starts: press the clutch and put the gear lever in neutral.

If the engine will not start, it is best to endeavor starting it using the bombardment of another vehicle before attempting to tow kickoff. Yous should only try to tow-start the engine if bound-starting is not successful. Tow-starting is an effort to start the engine via the motility of the wheels.

When tow-starting a vehicle with a petrol engine, do not tow it more than a curt distance, otherwise unburnt fuel can enter the catalytic converter and cause harm.

For technical reasons, information technology is not possible to tow-beginning a vehicle with automatic gearbox.

WARNING

Caution

Towing a vehicle with automatic gearbox and front-wheel drive

Certain restrictions must exist observed when towing your vehicle.

The vehicle can be towed with a towbar or towrope in the normal way, with all 4 wheels on the footing. When doing and then, please notation the following points:

• Release the parking brake.
• Make sure the selector lever is in the Due north position.
• The vehicle must not be towed faster than 50 km/h.

If the vehicle has to exist towed with a breakup truck, it must only exist suspended at the front end wheels. The reason for this is: the drive shafts are located on the front wheels. If the motorcar is towed with the rear wheels lifted off the route (i.e. travelling backwards), the drive shafts also plow backwards. The planetary gears in the automatic gearbox then turn at such high speeds that the gearbox will be severely damaged in a curt time.

If it is non possible to tow the vehicle as described above, or if it has to be towed farther than 50 km, it must be transported on a special auto transporter or trailer.

Towing a vehicle with manual gearbox and four-cycle drive

Certain restrictions must exist observed when towing your vehicle.

Please observe the notes.

The vehicle can exist towed with a towbar or towrope in the normal fashion, with all four wheels on the ground. It can also exist towed by a breakdown truck, with the wheels lifted at either the front or rear. When doing and so, please note the following points:

• The vehicle must not be towed faster than 50 km/h.
• The vehicle must not exist towed farther than 50 km.

Note

If it is non possible to tow the vehicle as described above, or if it has to be towed further than l km, it must be transported on a special car transporter or trailer.

Towing a vehicle with automatic gearbox and four-wheel bulldoze
